Title: Development, synthesis and characterization of nanoclay-based polymer nanocomposites

Abstract

Nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by in situ free-radical polymerization of acrylamide in an aqueous medium, using nanoclay (Laponite) as a crosslinker. The properties of the nanocomposite hydrogels (NC) were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphology of the samples was also examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which indicated that Laponite platelets were well dispersed within the prepared nanocomposite hydrogels. Thermal stability was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The swelling behavior of the NC was also investigated in distilled water and in saline solution at room temperature.
